An extraordinary Photo Tour and expedition to Yamal. We will photograph the last nomads of Siberia and bear witness to the festivities at the Herders Day Festival at Salekhard.
Our photographic tour starts north with an expedition to a valley located at the Polar Ural Mountains, undoubtedly one of the most wild and unexplored regions of Russia. The Nenet People are stilling living and preserving their age-old customs…
This Photo Expedition takes you through the heart and soul of northern Siberia, searching for the best and most incredible photographic opportunities. We will get the chance to get in some spontaneous photo sessions, as well as some which are structured in advance, and of course time to create a narrative of the day to day lives of this indigenous people. We will experience breath-taking scenarios in the nature, and see the indescribable northern lights; Russia at its purest.
Day 1: Arrive at Moscow Domedovo, transport to Airhotel Domodedovo***
Day 2: Breakfast, and transport to Domedovo Airport, departure of the flight to Salekhard. Salekhard, with 42,500 inhabitants is located on the banks of the river Ob. Constructed in 1595 as a Cossack fortress, the city bore the name Obdorsk – place on the Ob – until 1933. Salekhard means from the Nenets language “settlement at the Cape.” During the day we will visit the highlights of the city: Overnight in hotel, double room. (B)
Day 3: Breakfast at the hotel and transfer (1,5h) to Harp village, located north of Salekhard at the foot of the Polar Ural Mountains. Just north of the village we will go with the snowmobiles into the vast wilderness, crossing the Polar Ural Mountains. The Polar Urals Mountains range (66-68º N., 63-67º E.) is stretched from the northeast to the southwest. Across the valley of Sob’ River, with a thin line of the north most Trans-Ural railway connecting Seida and Labytnangi, the Ural mountains, before they blend into the coastal plain, widen again and the last groves of the Ural forest occur in valleys protected from winds. The nenet will welcome you with a warm cup of “chai”. Overnight in Chums (B,L,D)
Day 4, 5, 6, 7: Living together with the Nenet family, who lead their traditional lifestyle, which has hardly changed over the last century. You will homestay with the indigenous peoples of the North, getting to know their way of life, cooking national dishes and helping to set up chums (tents) and perform rites.
You can immerse yourselves in the real life of nomadic people, stay in their chum and find out more about their unique culture and ancient traditions. The focus for us is the quality of our shots, so we will be getting up very early in the morning so we have enough time to set up before first light, to ensure the perfect time and angle for what we want to capture. We will have skidoo in the camp to be able to transport you around in the area to take a shot from that place you like.
Overnight in chum (sharing).(B,L,D)
Day 7: After a shared breakfast with the family we will go by snowmobile to Harp, where we will be picked up by car and transport to Salekhard. In the afternoon you have the option to take a banya (Russian sauna). Overnight in hotel, double room. (B)
